Shifting to the present: my boss from the labs was in town last night, so a bunch of us who used to work for him decided to have a reunion of sorts at Meson Sabika, which is a Spanish tapas bar set in a huge mansion of a house.
I managed to get lost finding the place, but once I got there, it was great fun. Since there were 15 of us, we decided to take the option of letting the executive chef choose our meal for us, and it was divine. I tried a bit of everything, including things I don't normally eat -- veal with raspberry sauce, garlic potato salad which was more garlic than potato, filet mignon with blue cheese sauce, goat cheese, and dates wrapped in bacon. Excepting the bacon dates, which were just not my thing, ugh, the food was incredible. We topped it off with this dense bittersweet chocolate tart with raspberries.
And the people and conversation just added to the meal; we were so chatty they had to close the door between our room and the rest of the dining hall. It was so neat to see these people I haven't seen for 5 years or so and just chat over a 4 hour meal; we ended up closing the restaurant out.
... it was an evening entirely worth the $50/person price tag.
