I need your recommendations!
I'm off to Asheville in a couple weeks, and that means, road Trip! Which also means - audio books to keep myself company on the ride.

Give me your recommendations for some good audio books, pleeease - I'll be your friend forever and ever :)

what kind of book do you have in mind?

Amber and I drove up to New York recently, and we enjoyed one called The Tiber and the Potomac: Rome, America, and Empires of Trust by a guy named Madden, on parallels in the way the Roman republic and the US have accumulated influence in the world without deliberately empire-building. It sounds like it's basically a recorded series of lectures, though: very interesting material, as long as you can get over the fact that the lecturer stammers a little bit--but then, Amber's studied the Roman republic in the past. May or may not be your cup of tea.

Previously we'd enjoyed a fictional account of a similar era in Imperium [Harris], about Cicero's rise to power through the eyes of his secretary Tiro.

If ancient Rome isn't your thing, I can always wholeheartedly recommend the entire Hitchhiker's radio programme. The first two in the series were the beginnings of Adams's universe, as he wrote 'em in the '70s; the later three were adaptations of books that came after the fact--I think they were BBC4 productions of the early 2000s, created posthumously but well in the spirit of the originals. ...I hear there was an audiobook reading of the Hitchhiker's novels done by Adams himself, but all I'm familiar with is the radio programme.

I'm not sure if your local library is likely to have THHGTTG, though I'm sure I've found all five of the programmes available on the internets. I'll look around if you need 'em and can't find 'em.

peace,
