I got some gold cleaner at Wal-Mart... they also have silver, pearl, and various other metal jewelry cleaners.

A tip straight from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" - toothpaste works as silver polish. Rub it on with a cloth, wash off!

Another good way to clean silver (as long as it doesn't have any "antiquing" - the stuff that makes parts of the silver look black) is thus: Line a small bowl or baking dish with aluminum foil, and put the jewelry to be cleaned in there. Cover the jewelry with baking soda (just enough to cover it). Then, pour boiling water on the mess. Let it bubble a while, then rinse off your jewelry and voila! Clean silver!

neat -- does the toothpaste thing work for antiquing, or do I need to go get the heavy duty stuff?

Toothpaste should be safe for antiquing. However, as I learned when I tried to clean a celtic knotwork ring with toothpaste the other week, you might want to have a small brush or q-tip on hand to help with getting the toothpaste out of the really tiny spaces.

I had a sterling silver fountain pen that would tarnish easily and just used the stuff from the store -- any gentle silver cleaner will do. What's best about it is that you can soak your stuff a little and it detarnishes by itself.

I bought a polishing kit for my Dremel tool.

I also bought Tripoli (a polishing compound) at a local lapidary supply store; it take scratches out of silver faster than just rouge.

I use the felt tips on the Dremel with a bit of the rouge or tripoli to polish the surfaces of my silver and gold jewelry. Works great. :)
