Especially since the rules regarding their assignment are more than just "find three letters".

There are actually FOUR letters in them, though, the first being a country designator, so there's more name space than one realizes; us pilots know O'Hare as KORD. I'm sure they try to not overlap the last three letters among airline terminals worldwide, but I know at smaller private airports there is some overlap.

They also use numbers at "lesser" airports; Lake-in-the-Hills airport northwest of Chicago is 3CK.
