interesting vacation idea
So, inspired by the accounting of a vacation form a friend at work, I am now thinking it would be awfully fun to take a vacation that consists of a plane ride to Seattle, renting a car, and driving my way south along the coast to LA, stopping in Portland, SF, and San Diego along the way -- or would the be driving down to SD and stopping on LA on the way?

I would of course, get to visit lots of LJ people on the way. Hmmm, now to find someone to go with me :)

You'd hit Los Angeles before you got to San Diego -- and if you're in SD you'd HAVE to go to Tijuana! :)

San Diego would definitely come after LA ... last stop before Mexico!

The Green Tortoise is a fantastic hostel too! At least it is in Seattle. I had a blast staying there before I moved here.

I keep wondering if I'm too old for the tortoise

No way! Try it and have a great time. There were people definitely in their 40s and 50s when I was there, and it's not to say that people older than that can't stay there. The Seattle one is right downtown, right by the waterfront, the art museum, etc. It's funand inexpensive--whole hostel cooking experiences and free microbrew, if you drink, a couple nights a week.

Private rooms are just over $30, which I appreciated.

I've been on the tortoise, and at the hostel a gazillion times...but when I was younger. I'm not sure I have the tolerence levels I had back then.

I had an idea like this. I call it my "Rand Road Trip". Years ago when I was visiting Helena, Montana, I noticed the main street through town is US Route 12. I was like huh. Rand Road. Later I was able to trace US 12 from Chicago all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and having practically grown up on Rand Road, I thought it'd be neat to just follow US12 all the way from my home town to the West Coast. It'd probably take at least a week. There's probably nothing particularly interesting on the way, or maybe there is, which would be kind of cool.
